Gifted illustrator Steven Petruccio will offer a free workshop for children age 6 and older. This 45 minute event will be held in the upstairs gallery at the Merritt Bookstore. Kids love animals and animals love kids. Maybe that’s why the talented group of authors and illustrators on this picture book panel focus on critters in their latest books. Creatures featured vary from a cat lucky enough to be adopted by Julia Child to a dog put in charge of his feline housemates. Meet Punxsutawney Phyllis, a groundhog who proves that girls can predict the weather too. Learn how a flock of birds decided a major league baseball game. Discover the “poopendous” trait that all animals have in common and uncover the secret lives of honeybees. Featured authors and illustrators include Artie Bennett, Alison Ashley Formento, K.L. Editor Ann LaFarge will moderate a lively discussion on the craft of writing and the current state of publishing with literary agent Elizabeth Kaplan (The Elizabeth Kaplan Literary Agency), author and expert on author web pages Annik LaFarge (The Author Online), publisher Bronwen Hruska (Soho Press), literary consultant and former V.P. and Editor in Chief of Henry Holt Marjorie Braman, publisher Sharon Gallagher (President, ARTBOOK D.A.P.), novelist Jamie Saul (The First Warm Evening of the Year), and bestselling solo author and collaborator Jim DeFelice (The Helios Conspiracy.)

Explore the rich history of our local landscape in a gathering of memoirs, family histories, local travelogues and scholarly works. Participating authors include Virginia Augerson (Rural Life in the Hudson Valley 1880-1920), Norm Benson (Raised a Farmboy), Susan T. Davis (Summer of Red Rain), Rev. Mark D. Fiction provides an ideal format for examining the emotions and behaviors that determine the course of our lives. Meet middle grade and YA novelists Susannah Appelbaum, Susane Colasanti, Elizabeth Cody Kimmel, and Timothy Tocher and see how their characters confront life’s challenges. Whether the setting is fantastic (The Poisons of Caux), realistic (Keep Holding On and Long Shot), or somewhere in between (Paranorman), the issues are real and the problems universal.

After being entertained by children’s author Artie Bennett (Poopendous!) winners of this year’s young writers’ contest will read from their work that has been published in a special edition of edna: A Literary Journal. Don’t miss this display of the finest young literary talents in the area!

Come meet Ron McLarty, veteran actor, accomplished playwright, prolific audiobook narrator and acclaimed novelist. His most recent film role was in the movie How Do You Know? playing opposite Paul Rudd and Jack Nicholson. McLarty is noted for his body of work as one of the country’s leading audio book narrators having done over 100 titles including the narration of books authored by Stephen King, David Baldacci, Anne Rice, Richard Russo, Elmore Leonard, Ed McBain, and Scott Turow, among many others. His 4th novel is The Dropper.

Have you ever wondered how your favorite authors come up with the ideas for their books or how they are able to develop such life-like fictional characters? Award winning author Eileen Charbonneau (Elements of the Novel) will lead a discussion on the art of novel writing with accomplished writers Carol Goodman (The Demon Lover) and Jean Zimmerman (Orphanmaster.) Author Jamie Saul (The First Warm Evening of the Year) will also be appearing briefly.

3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Backbone of the Empire State: New York and the Hudson – in the Gallery at theLibrary

Aside from being merely a conduit for ships and a home for fish, the Hudson River has been an essential element in the development of the communities that line it and a source of knowledge and inspiration for many of the people who interact with it. Authors Mike Freeman (Drifting), Roger D. Stone (The Mightier Hudson: The Spirited Revival of a Treasured Landscape), and David L. Strayer (Hudson River Fishes and Their Environment) will discuss the various facets of the impact the Hudson River has on everyone near it.
